THANK

YOU

TOGETHER WE DID IT!

With your help and support together we raised $361,000 to build a 10,000 sq. ft. permanent in-ground concrete skate park in

its current location in Ojai.

It has been a busy 6 months of grassroots fundraising and events. WeÕve been fortunate to meet so many amazing local residents, local businesses and skate companies that have generously supported every single thing we organized to raise $350,000 in six months for the skate park.

One of the remarkable things about all the events we put together in the past six months is that each one was organized by volunteers and put together with no budget. Not one penny of the donated money to SKATE OJAI has been spent to put together any of the fundraising events. How many non-profits can say that?

Many of the supporters donated hundreds of hours to reach the goal for the skate park. It took a lot of dedicated parents, grandparents, local residents and businesses that met weekly for the past six months to organize all the events. Sometimes SKATE OJAI was organizing two events at one time so we could reach the goal.

SKATE OJAI and the Ojai Park & Recreation Department put together the first very successful event for the children of Ojai. We raised awareness for the need to build a new in-ground concrete skate park and to celebrate the youth in Ojai. Our first event was called Skate for the Green on May 31st. 2008.

All ages came out to participate and cheer on the skaters! ItÕs going to be great when we have seating for parents to watch their children skateboard at the new skate park.

139 youth from ages 1 ½ to 19 registered and participated.

Zander Gabriel skates the ONE WAY Board shop ramps. Two Ojai residents donated money to pay for the gas and the rental truck to bring them down from Santa Maria so we could add them to the skate park.

Skate for the Green Event

May 31st. 2008

This event was an opportunity for us to share with our Ojai community the importance of the skate park and to show support for the children of Ojai, creating an event that was free and only for children. It was a huge success. We had over 139 kids from ages 1 ½ to 19 who registered and participated in the expression sessions.

More than 55 youngsters (mainly girls) signed up for the skate lesson section of the event. Over 500 spectators visited the park throughout the day, making it one of the most successful events put on in Ojai for children.

Some of the Skate for the Green highlights.

á       The event T-shirt artwork was created by a local artist, Evan Rilling and printed on organic cotton t-shirts by the local business Cotton4people.

á       Skate for the GreenÕs energy needs were donated and run off solar power, thanks to the Shawn who owns the Solar Roller.

á       The first 100 skaters received goodie bags filled with donated items from skate and local businesses; skate stickers, snacks, DVDÕs, socks, chap stick, Ojai Trolley tokens and much more.

á       8 First Place prizes were complete decks were donated by skate companies. (Value $150.00 each).

á       8 Second Place prizes were skate decks were donated by skate companies. (Value $50.00 each).

á       8 Third Place prizes were sets of wheels were donated were donated by skate companies. (Value $27.00 each).

á       We also had so many great donated items for the giveaways to SKATE OJAI for the event, from local businesses and skate companies.

á       Peggi Oki a local environmental activist and former original DOGTOWN Z-BOYS skater donated her time to be our special guest judge for the skate expression session.

á       All the graphic designs for the posters and the event flyers were donated by Colleen McDougal and Brett Paitt.

á       FedEx KinkoÕs donated a large portion of the printing for the flyers.

á       Fast Signs of Ventura donated the highway sign for the event. Valued at over $250.00.

á       Another donor paid for all the sound system and audio/visual equipment from Lunars for the day and evening event.

á       Jersey Mikes donated meals for the volunteers that day.

á       Woodz Inc. donated waters for all the registered skaters.

á       We had over 24 vendorÕs booths in the park & ride area.

á       Professional photographer Steve Bissell and videographer Dave England shot the dayÕs events and both of them donated all their services to SKATE OJAI.

á       Skitz from Live 105.5 covered the event live on the radio.

á       This event was put on with no cost to Skate Ojai. The Ojai Park & Recreation Department used the vendor fees and $2.00 suggested skate registration fee to absorb any costs to the city.

á       We had exceptional PR for the event. Including a two page article in The Reporter the week before and the Ojai Valley News.

á       Children from all over Ventura County came to this event.

á       The Ojai Valley Board of Realtors and The Ojai Rotary volunteered for set-up, running some of the booths and break-down.

á       Check out Dave EnglandÕs video of 1 ½ yr. Old Pako Rilling skateboarding the half pipe during the Skate for the Green event on you tube. So far itÕs had 3,356 hits. Check out Pako Rips Now on youtube.com.

á       Dale Sumersille and Jody James did an amazing job organizing all the details for these daysÕ events.

AUTOGRAPH SESSION & RAFFLE WITH RODNEY MULLEN.

MAY 31st. 2008

The Skate for the Green day ended with our second event at Chaparral Auditorium that started at 5:30 pm.. Local resident and professional skateboarder for GLOBE, Rodney Mullen donated his time for an autograph session for the kids and the skate movie that was donated by local resident and GLOBE owner Matt Hill.

Chris Robinson from GLOBE spent the whole day with us and made sure all the kids received some great skate goodies to take home with them.

That evening over 275 kids and parents filled Chaparral Auditorium to watch the new GLOBE skate movie and meet Rodney Mullen. We estimate that over 1,000 people involved and attended these two parts of a one day event.

Many of the parents were just as excited as the kids to meet legendary skateboarder Rodney Mullen.

Over 275 kids and parents attended the free showing of UNITED BY FATE, donated by GLOBE.

John Mirk of the Ojai Planning Commission and Patagonia employee volunteered his time for the event and installed and operated all the audio/visual equipment for the event.

EVERY SINGLE EFFORT AND

PENNY COUNTS!

Hannah Greene of Ojai celebrated her twelfth birthday by asking her guests to bring donations to the skate park instead of gifts. She helped to raised $180.00 that day which was matched by a generous anonymous donor and turned into a $360.00 donation to SKATE OJAI.

The Ojai Valley School Surf Team donated $630.00 dollars by having a fundraiser.

Over fifteen employees at PatagoniaÕs headquarters in Ventura baked treats and had a SKATE & BAKE fundraising bake sale for SKATE OJAI in the cafeteria at lunch. In one hour they sold $320.00 worth of baked goods. Patagonia matched the $320.00 since SKATE OJAI is a non-profit 501c3; those two donations were once again matched by the anonymous donor bringing the bake sales total to:

 $ 1280.00. Now thatÕs a bake sale!

Copper Clark of Ojai set up a table at the Ojai Farmers Market for donations to the skate park. She raised $250.00 that day.

MIXED MESSAGE SKATE ART SHOW at the VILLAGE JESTER in Ojai

June 28th. , 2008

Just three days after the SKATE OJAI dinner and silent auction we were already putting together an art show at The Village Jester. By this evening we were down to the last two days to reach the goal of $350,000 in 6 months.

A big thank you goes out to Dave and Joanna England for organizing the event with Curator and talented skate photographer Desiree Astorga, Gregg Witt of Premise Marketing and Hurley to organize a one of kind Skate Art Show in Ojai to raise funds for the skate park. The art show consisted of a solid collection of some of the worlds most respected skate artist and photographers. This was a real treat for our small town.

ThanksÕ to the owner of The Village Jester, Nigel who hosted the event this evening and extended the show for one month at his restaurant to continue the awareness for the need to build a new skate park in Ojai. Check out www.Hurley.com ÒMixed MessageÓ blog for more photos of the event and art work.

It took four volunteers two days to hang over 80 pieces of art and photography. Several of the artists donated 100% of the sale of the art to SKATE OJAI all the others donated a generous 40%-50% of the sales to SKATE OJAI.

The evening was a great success. We were treated to a life music performance by skate legend Ray Barbee and a full house of supporters, which included the HurleyÕs amateur skate team on the opening night.

Once again, Tania Al-Awar surprised us at the end of the evening with a $ 16,000 donation from

The Bruce and Marilyn Wallace Charitable Giving Foundation to SKATE OJAI. This very generous donation put us over the $350,000 goal.

We would like to give a special thank you to the owners of The Copper House and Glen Muse Estate for donating lodging for several of the artists who attended the art show from out of town.

Mixed Message Skate Art show featured the works of these talented artist and photographers.

OJAI SKATE TEAM CELEBRATES AT THE WORLD FAMOUS DEER LODGE

July 2nd. 2008

By now we had reached our goal and it was time to celebrate!

Lisa Kenton a huge skate park supporter and the owner of the world famous Deer Lodge found out about the Ojai High School Skate TeamÕs accomplishments at the NHSSA Finals in Santa Monica at the Red Bull headquarters on June 28th. and offered to treat all the skate team members to a special dinner at the Deer Lodge. The dinner was well attended and the food was fabulous.

Just by chance Eric Koston one of the best professional skateboarders in the industry was in town for a wedding and having dinner at the Deer Lodge at the same time. We introduced Eric to the Ojai high   school skate team, took a group photo, told him about our efforts over the last six months to raise money for a new in-ground skate park and got some autographs.

Five days after we saw Eric Koston at the Deer Lodge I received a surprise call from him. He had looked up my number on our website www.ojaiskatepark.com which is on the Ojai Skate Team sticker we gave him that night and read about all the efforts to raise money for the skate park and wanted to donate all the proceeds from a Charitable Golf Tournament that he was organizing and participating in on July 8th. 2008. Thanks Eric!

L.A. X-GAMES

JULY 31, 2008

Two of the Ojai High School Skate Team members competed in one of skateboardingÕs most prestigious events at the X-Games in L.A.Õs Staples Center.

Due to their performances during spring competition, Zander Gabriel and J.T. Erickson both qualified to compete against the top high school skateboarders in California.

Gabriel, 17 will be a senior at Nordhoff High School this year and Erickson, 17 will be a senior at Chaparral High School.

Sixteen skaters were given 15 minutes to skate the same street course as the professionals. They were judged on their use of the entire course, technical skill, degree of difficulty and style. Both boys hit the course hard. Of the 16, they chose six finalists. Gabriel was one of those six finalists who then were asked to hit the course yet again.

When it came time for the awards, Gabriel placed second. Thirteen Ojai supporters were there to root the boys on for the big day and congratulate them both.

Gabriel credits the Ojai Skate Park for some of his success. ÒThe Ojai Skate Park was a great place for me to learn when I was younger.Ó
